One high point of the 2011 BMW lineup is the introduction of the new N55 engine, an inline 6-cylinder Twin-Scroll Turbo Engine that will be installed in the 135i Coupe and Convertible, the 335i Sedan, Coupe and Convertible; the all new 535i Sedan, the 535i Grand Turismo; the X5 xDrive 35i and the X6 xDrive 35i. This new single turbo engine replaces the previous twin turbo inline 6-cylinder engine and although it shares the same aluminum block it uses a new cylinder head with BMW Valvetronic and incorporates a single twin scroll type turbo.
The results are amazing— while still delivering 300hp and 300 lb-ft torque like the previous engine, fuel efficiency has improved by 7% and the driver feels a faster response. There is no doubt that you will certainly notice the difference when you put your foot down on the pedal. Yes, even good things can be made even better. The previous twin turbo engine will still be offered with Z4 sDrive 35i and an enhanced version of the same engine will powerthe Z4 sDrive 35is and the 335is Coupe and Convertible. In addition to the brand new models, several existing models have seen redesigns and/or received improved option choices and features.
On your next visit to the showroom, we would be happy to tell you all about these changes. It’s not all about power, it’s also about control. The new transmission choices for 2011 are very exciting. They are my personal favorite for new options of this upcoming sales year. The 7-Speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) that has previously been reserved for M-series vehicles is now available as an upgraded option to the Steptronic Automatic Transmission on many models. Automatic transmission lovers have something special in store as well: BMW’s new 8-Speed Automatic Transmission will now be offered on the 535i, 550i and the new X5.
